The Puerto Rico Sports Journalists Association (APDPUR) and the Zorrilla family officially announce that the 2025 Pedrín Zorrilla Award will be presented to distinguished Puerto Rican baseball player Javier Báez.
This announcement is made in observance of the 120th anniversary of the birth of Pedro “Pedrín” Zorrilla Porrata, a historic figure in Puerto Rican sports, former player, sports advocate, and founder of the Cangrejeros de Santurce professional baseball franchise.
The award recognizes Báez’s outstanding career in professional baseball, his contributions to the sport, and his achievements in Major League Baseball (MLB). In 2025, Báez was selected as the starting center fielder for the American League in the MLB All-Star Game, becoming the first player in MLB history to start the midseason classic at both shortstop and in the outfield. He also joins a select group of players who have started the All-Star Game at three different positions, alongside Albert Pujols, Pete Rose, and Harmon Killebrew.
Up to the All-Star break, Báez recorded 259.2 errorless innings in center field, reaffirming his elite defensive performance and exceptional versatility.

Who was Pedrín Zorrilla?
He was born in Manatí, Puerto Rico, on November 9, 1905. He is remembered as the founder and owner of the “Santurce Cangrejeros” Baseball Club, one of Puerto Rico’s most popular and beloved professional baseball franchises. He was a friend and companion of his players. Pedrín and his Cangrejeros played a leading role in the golden age of our national sport. In addition to playing semi-professional baseball before 1938, Zorrilla was a scout for several major league teams, primarily for the San Francisco Giants for more than 20 years, and then the Chicago Cubs. His knowledge of the game and ability to recognize talent led him to sign players like Roberto Clemente, Orlando Cepeda, Rubén Gómez, Juan Pizarro, José Pagán, Julio Navarro, Henry Cotto, Carmelo Martínez, and many others.
His professional relations with organized baseball in the United States were a key factor in the development of baseball in Puerto Rico. He was admired and respected in the upper echelons of said baseball. That made it easier to bring players like Willie Mays,
Josh Gibson, Billy Byrd, Willard Brown, Bob Thurman, Buster Clarkson, Tom Lasorda, and others to Puerto Rico to play with the Cangrejeros.
He was also a member of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives from 1961 to 1968. However, it was his qualities as an upright person and of high moral principles that led him to be admired and respected by all. This may have been his best legacy.

Jorge Colón-Delgado
Escritor • Cineasta • Historiador del Béisbol • Recipiente Premio Eduardo Valero 2026 (SABR Latino), nació en Santurce, Puerto Rico. Durante las últimas cuatro décadas se ha dedicado a investigar y escribir sobre la historia del béisbol.
En 2003 fue nombrado Historiador Oficial de la Liga de Béisbol Profesional de Puerto Rico, función que desempeñó hasta 2006 y que retomó desde 2018 hasta el presente bajo el nombre de Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente. En 2008 fue exaltado al Salón de la Fama del Deporte de Santurce como Escritor y Propulsor, y en 2017 al Salón de la Fama de Río Piedras. En el 2009, el Salón de la Fama del Béisbol en Cooperstown le otorgó un Pase Vitalicio por su contribución a la preservación de la historia del béisbol.
En 2016 fue reconocido como Mejor Periodista Deportivo de Internet del Área Metro y de Puerto Rico. Además, forma parte del Comité de Selección del Salón de la Fama de la Serie del Caribe.
Es autor de siete libros: *Camarero en punta* (1998), *La Maquinaria Perfecta* (2007), *Historia del Clásico del Caribe* (2009), *Pedrín Zorrilla: El Cangrejo Mayor* (2011), *75 años de Béisbol Profesional Boricua* (2014), *Dream Team del Béisbol Profesional Boricua* (2015) e *Historia de los Indios de Mayagüez* (2019). Cinco de sus libros sobre béisbol forman parte de la biblioteca del Salón de la Fama del Béisbol en Cooperstown.
El 15 de abril de 2022 fue seleccionado para integrar el comité “42 for 21”, cuyo propósito es recomendar jugadores, dirigentes, árbitros, ejecutivos y pioneros de las Ligas Negras para su consideración al Salón de la Fama del Béisbol.
En 2018 fue designado Historiador Oficial de la Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente, y en 2022 nombrado Coordinador General del Salón de la Fama del Béisbol Profesional Puertorriqueño.
En el ámbito audiovisual, es guionista, director y narrador de documentales históricos. Produjo y dirigió *Metamorfosis* (2019), sobre la historia de los hipódromos de Puerto Rico, presentado en el Hipódromo Camarero, donde también realizó la narración. Su más reciente trabajo, *El inicio del béisbol en Puerto Rico* (finalizado en 2025 y sometido al Puerto Rico Film Festival), explora los orígenes del deporte en la isla desde el primer partido documentado en 1898 en Santurce, entre Borinquen y Almendares.
Participó como escritor acreditado e historiador en pantalla en el documental premiado Béisbol: Legends of Puerto Rico (2023).
Su experiencia en medios incluye una sección deportiva en el periódico *El Nuevo Día*, así como labores en radio y televisión. También se desempeñó durante 16 años como Director de Prensa del Clásico del Caribe (Serie Hípica del Caribe / Confederación Hípica del Caribe), coordinando coberturas mediáticas de eventos internacionales.

El sitio destaca el respeto y el “comfort level” que estos atletas encontraron en la isla durante la era de segregación en Estados Unidos.
Jorge Colón Delgado combina investigación rigurosa, escritura prolífica, producción audiovisual y gestión digital para preservar y difundir el patrimonio deportivo puertorriqueño y caribeño. Su trabajo conecta el béisbol boricua con las Ligas Negras, las Grandes Ligas y la Serie del Caribe, posicionándolo como un referente en la intersección de historia, cultura y deporte. Por eso fue reconocido con el Premio Eduardo Valero 2026 de SABR Latino por su destacada labor en la investigación, preservación y difusión de la historia del béisbol latinoamericano.
