GABRIEL CANCEL KANSAS CITY #30

In 2015, Cancel was one of five players from Puerto Rico taken in the top 10 rounds, with only two, left-hander Jovani Moran and Cancel, making it out of A ball to date. A product of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy who was taken in the seventh round and signed for a slightly over-slot bonus of $200,000, Cancel has moved one rung at a time showing glimpses of offensive potential, including in his move to Double-A in 2019.

Since his high school days, Cancel has shown good bat speed from the right side of the plate, with plenty of strength coming from his 6-foot-1 frame. He’s started to tap into raw power more consistently in games in 2019, especially to his pull side, where most of his home run pop has come. A decent runner who is better underway, Cancel has mostly played second base since his debut summer, when he split time between second and short. He has the arm for the left side of the infield, but not the range to play up the middle on that side on a daily basis.

Cancel does have the skills to move around the infield — he’s seen time at both short and third over the last two seasons — and likely profiles best as a utilityman with some pop. If it all clicks for the 22-year-old, he could be an offensive-minded regular at second base.
