A mainstay on the summer showcase circuit, Greene cemented his status as perhaps the best pure high school hitter in the class with his performance at several events. He capped it off by leading USA Baseball’s 18 and Under National Team in RBIs as it won gold in the Pan-American Championships, then took home the Gatorade Player of the Year Award in Florida after batting .422 with eight homers as a Hagerty HS (Oviedo, Fla.) senior. The Tigers signed Greene for $6.18 million, slot value for the No. 5 overall pick, and he spent all of nine games in the Gulf Coast League before earning a promotion to the Class A Short Season level.
Greene can flat-out hit, boasting a terrific approach with a smooth but explosive swing from the left side of the plate. It’s more of a line-drive approach right now, but he did start driving the ball more over the summer and he’ll show excellent raw power in batting practice, especially to the pull side. Greene improved his athleticism and moved better during his senior year, both down the line and in the outfield. He still profiles best as a corner outfielder, which might mean left field because of a less-than-average arm.
Greene’s advanced feel to hit along with his effortless raw power leads scouts to believe that his power will emerge earnestly in games as he adds strength to his projectable frame. Though he’ll need time to develop, the final product could be that of a middle-of-the-order run producer who hits for both average and power.
