Baseball Beyond October: The Caribbean’s Winter Tradition Lives On

As Major League Baseball turns its focus to the World Series, the passion for the game is just as alive across Latin America. October doesn’t just belong to the MLB postseason — it also marks the start of the Caribbean Winter Leagues, where fans from the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela rally behind their local heroes.

Each league has entered the new season with renewed intensity, as clubs reload in pursuit of their national crowns and a shot at the Caribbean Series title — currently held by Leones del Escogido, reigning champions of both the Caribbean Series and the LIDOM.

🇩🇴 Dominican Republic (LIDOM): Estrellas Shine Early Under Tatís Sr.

The 2025–26 LIDOM campaign is off to a familiar start, with Estrellas Orientales once again setting the pace. Under the leadership of Fernando Tatís Sr., the San Pedro de Macorís club has jumped out to a 4–1 record, looking every bit like a title contender in the season’s opening week.

Estrellas have leaned on a well-rounded formula of pitching and timely hitting. Their staff owns a 3.30 ERA while holding opponents to a .228 batting average, showing early command on the mound. On offense, veterans Miguel Sanó and Roberto Castro have each connected for two home runs through five games, leading both their team and the league in that category. Across the league, Bryan Torres and Mickey Gasper of Toros del Este, along with Aderlin Rodríguez of Águilas Cibaeñas, have also made strong early impressions.

However, this weekend’s LIDOM schedule has been suspended due to Hurricane Melissa, with the league prioritizing player and fan safety amid forecasts of severe weather across the island.

🇻🇪 Venezuela (LVBP): Tigres Roar to Dominant Start

In Venezuela, the Tigres de Aragua have wasted no time establishing themselves as early favorites in the LVBP, opening the season with a 7–1 record. Veteran hitters José “Cafecito” Martínez (1.332 OPS) and José Peraza (.378 AVG) have fueled a high-powered offense as Aragua chases its first league title in a decade — and another shot at Caribbean glory, having last lifted the Serie del Caribe trophy in 2009. On the pitching side, José González has provided stability to the rotation, posting a 1.11 WHIP with nine strikeouts over eight innings of work to anchor an effective early-season staff.

🇲🇽 Mexico (LMP): Cañeros and Naranjeros Lead the Pack

In Mexico’s Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacífico (LMP), two traditional powerhouses have taken early control of the standings. Cañeros de Los Mochis and Naranjeros de Hermosillo have both opened the season at 7–3, setting the tone for what promises to be a tight race in the weeks ahead.

Los Mochis are led by veteran outfielder Leonys Martín, whose 1.130 OPS ranks among the best in the league, just behind teammate Josh Rehwaldt (1.284). For Hermosillo, pitching has been the backbone of success. José Samayoa (1.80 ERA) and Touki Toussaint (3.10 ERA) have combined for consistency and control, both posting a 1.10 WHIP to rank among league leaders in that category.

🇵🇷 Puerto Rico (La Pro): New Identity, Same Passion

While the action is already underway elsewhere, Puerto Rico’s rebranded league — now officially known as “La Pro” — is gearing up for its own first pitch. After notable growth in fan engagement and on-field competition last season, league officials aim to sustain that momentum in 2025–26. The season opens on November 6, when the Senadores de San Juan visit the Indios de Mayagüez to kick off another chapter of Puerto Rican winter baseball.

⚾ The Road to Caracas 2026 Begins

Although it’s still early in the season across the Caribbean, the race toward the 2026 Serie del Caribe in Caracas is already taking shape. From Santo Domingo to Hermosillo, from Maracay to Mayagüez, the sound of baseball echoes once more — and the spirit of October belongs as much to the Caribbean as it does to the Major Leagues.
